Using your experiences on this project and relating your programmes to other webisodes you have researched, discuss how taking account of the online audience affects the process of showing creative work
The effect of audiences with an online project with all processes can affect an outcome in different ways. Although the audience feedback is very important, if it wasn’t for the internet and such sites as YouTube or Facebook, I couldn’t have got much of following for our web series, as without this technology our viewing audience would be very limited. I would have had to pay for screenings of our web series in local cinemas. Or held such events in local establishments to be able to get the audience feedback needed.
For the start of this project I first started out with researching about other web series, the one I watched the most was The Guild, which even though I don’t play and never have played the game which the series is based upon, I was attracted to it by the sort of “nerdy” humour which I sometimes find really funny. This web series as really tired to attract a specific audience, which is a person who play or understand World of Warcraft. They have really tried to create a sort of online TV program, as it has most of the ele
ments needed to be classed as one. Even though the episodes are short, they always seem to follow the same suit, which to a following is very good as there is not much change. The only downside to this is that if you start mid series, you don’t really get what’s going on. I had to go back and watch the first few to really see what this series was about. In our web series we played upon the idea of including internet humour for games or anything to do with the web in general, but I thought that would keep our options quite limited and would only attract a certain audience. Which I was trying to appeal to as many as I can, so this idea was dropped.Due to a low budget we couldn’t advertise in newspapers or on TV. Yet again, thanks to the internet I was able to promote and advertise our series. From set up groups on Facebook, advertising to an audience so they will watch our first episode. To tweeting on Twitter, a quick update every day reminding people to watch the webisode once it was released. This was a quick and easy way to promot
e, and most importantly, t
his method was completely free. Thanks to this method of advertising, I didn’t just get viewers from the UK; we also got a few from the United States, and a few in Spain, which was quite surprising. This shows the importance of the Internet in the “modern world” as without it, the world would feel a much bigger place. But now we can chat with people from other countries in seconds.Audience feedback was vital to our project, as without it, I really couldn’t have moved forward for more episodes. After the first episode was aired, I got quite a few comments all suggesting different problems and solutions with the series. The main problem with the first one was that the sound was too quiet, because of this feedback I was able to overcome this issue and I was given proper boom mic poles, so I could correctly sound u
Even though we have over 700 views to our first video, I still believe that this is very small. This video is the most popular on YouTube has 136,396,904 views at the time I wrote this, and all it is, is some weird guy dancing:
It shows that even though some people think 700 is a lot, there can be so much more. This was only our first episode. The other two have a lot less hits: Here is the view count for each Episode
Episode1:

Episode2:

Episode3:

This is showing that people get excited over new things, but after the first one, people just tend to think, oh it will like the other one, and stop watching, this is why I should of promoted by a brief outline of the episode before hand to make it sound exciting to an audience, I guess that is something to think about for future projects.
To summaries, I believe without the internet, such projects like this one cannot work as well and I could not get the audience feedback received during the project. Audience feedback is curtail for any series, TV or online, as is shows what the viewer really thinks, and If you don’t listen to them, you wont appeal to their needs and they will stop watching, if I was to continue with more episodes on Lines, I would defiantly take onboard what the audience were asking for, and manipulate the series to meet most of their requirement’s.
Focus Group Video
I quicky edited a video on friday of the focus group, the sound is a little quiet.

Lines third poster
Here is the poster for the Third and last lines episode, showing the air date again and different pictures i think are taken from the last episode

Monday 01/02/10
Today I was continuing to edit the third episode, here is actual evidence that i was the editor.

When I got back to long road I still had some changed to do that pete suggested about the time moving, so it took me a while to do, so it took me a little longer to upload. I felt that yet again i was left to sort everything out for the episode, because everyone felt that i had it done. It's not even my task to upload it, but seeing as its on my laptop i do it anyway. Unfortunately because i had to these changed pete suggested it took me about 10 minutes past the end of the lesson to get it uploaded. I was left alone in my group to do it. Which i felt people feel that they don't care long as if someone else has done it. But I'm sure people were just 'busy' :/

Lines Second Poster
Here is the second poster for lines, which I helped to make which shows the air date of the second Episode
Friday 28/01/2010
I was finishing editing the 2nd episode of lines, and because of people had other commitments that day. I felt like I had to make the decisions of everything myself, as the people who were still with me from my group wasn't giving me enough feedback, so i felt Episode 2 could of been a lot better if it was watched before upload, but unfortunately there was some mistakes because i didn't really get a second opinion so i missed quite a few things.
during this lesson i decided to start editing episode 3, but i didn't have a script, so i had to try to make it up as i go, I realised i was missing quite a lot.
I just feel that i am not getting enough feedback to be able to make changed to make the edit of the episode look a lot better.

27/01/10 - Editing second Episode
Today I started to Edit the second episode of Lines, As people has exams the room was very quiet so i was able to edit well without much distractions.
As i started to edit i realised the footage was alot better then last time, they took alot better care over shots and did many many shots for most of the script. There was a few which could of done with re-shooting, which the group might do tomorrow when we shoot.
every thing is pretty much edited, the group just need to check over what i've done and the whole group needs to watch it and agree on it.

For this show project I was first in a big group of the whole class, at first I was just researching web series, I was really wondering how this was going to work with the whole class because I knew we all had “creative” differences, but I just went with the flow because I thought maybe it may work out, because we all knew each other now and perhaps we might work well together, but it didn’t work out.
In the big group I was given the role of Co-Editor with Loz, even though I was ignored at first, I eventually got heard and given the place. Even though it look the whole lesson to assign people places, which wasn’t very good.
Eventually Nick split us up, which was a good move so we had 2 smaller teams to work in, each with their own job,
I again was assigned editor, which was good because that’s the main thing I really enjoy. Even though I knew my part wouldn’t come in till later, I thought I could still help out.
Over a weekend I quickly came up with a logo, which everyone seemed to like, I just downloaded a font that looked like a chalk writing and put a blackboard on the background, I think it worked well, and thats the logo we use everywhere.
Due to family issues I missed 3 days of college, in which time I thought most of the decisions would have been made and I thought it would make me just fall behind and everything would have been made without my opinion. But the only thing that was done without my opinion was the Cast, which once I looked over everyone I knew they all made the right choice.
Once I was back I was given the task of editing the auditions into on
ce long and boring edit. I thought there was no need for this as we all had seen the videos anyway and we only wanted proof that we actually had auditions, so all I did was make a minute video and stick every person that auditioned on it. I thought it worked out well.
Over the next few days I felt that I was just picking up and doing things people couldn’t be bothered to do, for example I was updating Twitter when other people didn’t or forgot about it, they only started to update when prompt to do so, but now they are updating it all the time which is good.
Another thing I did because nobody else was going to was shot lists and storyboards for episode 1, I didn’t do these alone, Tara did them with me, but as I was Editor and she was Production Manager, this wasn’t either of our jobs, but we knew If we didn’t do them, they wouldn’t get done. In the end they were not needed because on the shoot the director didn’t use the shot list!
On the shoot I decided do direct and film the Title sequence myself as nobody really read my idea about it and to be honest they couldn’t care less about it because they knew someone else was covering it, If I didn’t step in and come up with an idea I think we wouldn’t have a good title sequence and it would have been rushed.
Finally I come to my Job I was assigned to. Editing, at first I was being pestered every 5 minutes by Dave, I felt that he really wanted to edit, but couldn’t so he spent the time trying to annoy me, but after a while he just left me alone to get on with it, and in the end I personally think the episode looks good. Maybe could have done with more shots.
For the next episode I think the group need to stick to the storyboard more and get everything done, ready for a smoother edit so the group are not so rushed nearer the time of the launch.

Current Feedback - 24/01/10
Today i checked the Video and we have had over 400 views, that's not bad, it could be better, but it's a very good start seeing its been on for just over a day and a half, and we have had 11 ratings giving us a total of 4 1/2 stars, which is alot better then I expected.

We have reciveved 11 comments from over users just on the video, giving us positive feedback and all round saying they are enjoying the video:

and finally when i look at our profile i see we have had 6 subscribers so far, making sure they are the first to see when the next video is out, and some have left us comments on our profile. One seems to be Steves (guy who played the teacher) Son. Which if true is quite funny.

If we just keep posting on Lines twitter, myspace and facebook pages, I think the views will just keep going up, and also if Dave ever gets round to posting it on our website and Facepunch page, we will get alot more hits.
It's going well i think! :D

Launch - 22/01/10
Today is the final day to get the editing done for the first episode, it was due to Air at 7pm tonight.
There was alot of tweaking to do for the edit, just little things to make it seem more professional, for example, the flashback scenes, i was originally going to just have "previously" written at the side, but I thought using a sort of white cloud around it will make it seem like someone is remembering what is going on, everyone agreed that this looked alot better,
I didn't just get on with it and ignore everyone else, I kept stopping to ask for feedback on the edit and sound levels for the voice overs, nobody seemed to have much to say except there was a little continuity error which i changed in a matter of seconds.
Once the edit was done i went through music with Sam to try to make it seem a bit more lively, even though a detention is meant to be dull and boring, we thought no music wouldn't be very attractive.
I uploaded it at 4:10 ready for the launch at 7pm, just hope people watch it and like it!

Tomorrow i have a number of things to do for the edit, I have to Make sure the sound is ok, and all able to hear it, and make sure everything is in order for the voice overs.
the next thing that is needed to do is find out a good effect for the flashback instead of just black which is just currently there
Finally some music needs adding, just so its not too boring.

Title Sequence20/01/10
Today after filming everything yesteday. I set about working on the Title squence, at first Dave thought that it was too long, but i managed to shorten it down to about 20 seconds, not to long so it dosen't take up too much time, All i did was speed up a few clips and used an effect called Strobe, which looks like they are all just photos added together, here is the end result:
I started on the proper editing also, but I feel I really need to get on with it to be able to reach the deadline on friday, if i don't get any distractions or keep getting stopped i should be able to get it finished no problem.

self-assessment on project
I don't think i have kept up with blogging very well so far as I was away for a few days due to family issues so i was behind, but i think i'm all caught up now. there are a few holes in my blog that need to be updated, need more evidence and a few other thingd, but i will keep going and make sure i'm all up to date.
The marketing has gone well and the group have started to get a following on such websites as facebook and twitter. but I need to keep them updated to keep attracking more interest. The group have also got some merchendise out there, not many items, but i don't think the series is popular enough for fans to buy stuff for the show yet. but I just need to keep everything updated.
Scripting was done in a matter of days, so The group are ahead of the game with that. Planning was going well also, we had everything in place ready for auditions since the auditions everything started to go downhill, and people stopped doing work.

Plan for 20/01/10
As i am editor i have to now try to edit together the footage from the shoot into something worth watching.
I am first going to get the intro done and quicktimed, so it can easily be transported from coleridge to long road without use of a hard drive really.
But i'm not sure if it's a good idea to fully start editing the webseries tomorrow, as if we have to stop and i am nowere near finished, we will have to find a way to transport all the footage and project to longroad for thursdays lesson.

Filming 19/01/10
Right at the start of the filming when they were getting everything ready for the shoot, i took the camera into the room opposit to film the titles, which ran quite smoothly the group got everthing done in about 10-15 minutes which was good, so my job was done for the filming for the night, but i thought i would hang around and just be there incase anyone needed a hand with anything, i wasn't even in the same room for most of the shoot, but i was just there for support.
I was just an observer for most of the shoot. and once everything was going i realised while shooting they hardly used the shotlist and storyboard that Tara and I worked on for ages, that was a bit annoying as i felt most of the shots they did use were static and repetitive. But I'm sure when i wasn't in the room they were trying to keep it from looking boring.
I was slightly dissapointed that the group didn't get time to shoot parts of the 2nd episode, we will have to organise another date for all the actors to come back, but due to exams, this is going to be tricky.
all in all the shoot went ok, but would of run alot smoother if the group just kept the the storyboard, and didn't just have the 'That will do' attitude that some people have in this group.

Start of storyboarding
I have now started to storyboard to get ready for the shoot, we need to have a strong storyboard so we can shoot more effectivly and run quickly and smoothly, as the group do not have alot of time to shoot, we have to get things done asap on the shoot, and having a good outline of a storyboard will hopfully give us an idea of all the ranges of shots the I need for editing, I started doing part 1 of episode 1, the part I did the shotlist for, I've done about half of them but I need to continue with it in the following lesson.

ShotList for Lines Episode 1 Part 1
Because we are leaving the storyboarding till tomorrow, Tara and I decided to help out by splitting part 1's script into half then we can make a shot list helping us work quicker tomorrow so I can get the storybord done ready for the shoot during the week:
Here is what i did
Shotlist – Lines Episode 1
1. (Narration) “My name’s Jake Wood” – Close up of Jake leaning against a wall, the camera slowly zooms out while the narration is going.
2. Once Narration is over- cuts to a long shot of Jake standing against the classroom wall, the teacher with their back to the camera but slightly to the left while Jake is to the right and a bit smaller.
3. Cuts to mid shot of teacher’s face - “You may think your screen reputation may be beneficial to you, but it’s not going to help”
4. Close up of jakes face - “three words”
5. Mid Shot of teacher again – “Flies. Open”
6. Quickly Pans down – “Unpleasant”
7. In Silence, cuts to a close up of the teacher (for a few seconds)
8. Then cuts back to jake with a slightly disgusted look on his face (about 2 seconds)
9. Long shot of the left hand side of the pair, The teacher looks down.
10. Mid shot of teacher, zips up his flies, then stares at Jake for a bit
11. Cuts to Jake starting to look worried.
12. Side shot of the pair again, then the teacher says “Lets see how you cope in detention” ect
13. Shot over the shoulder of the teacher, Jake sighs.
14. Cuts to black.
15. TITLE SEQUENCE
16. Camera fades in slightly blurred
17. Focuses and we see Taylor’s face, Watching Jake Move to sit down.
18. Cuts to over the shoulder shot of Taylor watching Jake walk. He’s in the left hand side of the shot as Jake walks on the right. He starts to get up
19. Cuts to behind Jake walking – Taylor stands up and blocks his path
20. Cuts now to behind Taylor and we see Jake quickly stop dead and just looks at him.
21. Cuts back to behind Jake as Taylor says “At this school, we believe in a state of hierarchy. I am at the top.”
22. Cuts back behind Taylor “You, my friend, are at the bottom. The dirty stinking bottom. You got that?”
23. Cuts to a close up of jakes pocket, he gets tic-tacs out of them
24. Zooms out tot the previous shot, Jake shakes them in front of Taylor’s face and says “Tic-tac?”
25. Camera moves round to megan
26. Close up, with her feet on the desk, her feet are closest in the shot.
27. Pans slowly up Megan’s Body, some sort of music getting a lot louder showing the blistering music coming out of her headphones, while this happens, Jake is narrating “That’s Megan. She doesn’t say a great deal, although she proved she was good at raising two fingers simultaneously.
28. Cuts over to a long shot of Zeke sitting at a desk Looking out of the Window “And finally, we come to Zeke Fernando, the nicest one of the bunch.”
29. Cuts to a long shot behind ZEKE sitting at a table, talking to TAYLOR and MEGAN. TAYLOR is sitting on top of a table, listening to him intently. While megan is on the chair with her feet up as usual.
30. Over the shoulder of Taylor, looking at zeke who is in the right of the frame, he is saying “We were at a house party the other night and my mate. He, erm, he had tons to drink. Like a serious amount..”

Quick Video of auditions
Here is the video of the auditionees that came to the auditions yesterday, it's just a small video showing how many people came. The music over the top of the video is the soundtrack that I am going to be using for the introduction sequence.
Idea for title sequence
The main idea i had was based around the name Lines, so i thought we could have a close up of a hand writing the name LINES on the whiteboard, then it zooms out: I thought we could have each character quickly writing their name on the board, but like in the title sequence of scrubs, after they write their name and turn round, they change into another character,
look at this from the titles of scrubs:
They change, so someone turns round, writes there name, turns back and changes into another character, then they do the same. only very short like that scrubs intro.
I was also thinking about slowing the frame rate down slightly so its kinda jumpy, like someone is taking loads of photos and creating a sort of flip book of it, so its all slighty distorted.
Just and idea. I believe i can do this alright, so if you guys are happy with it, we can shoot it when i'm back on thursday.

Quick Logo
Friday 8th
Today i knew that this would be the last chance i would be able to work on this project till Thursday because i had to take a few days out to attend a funeral.
This day went alot better then previous attempts at this project because the group were split into 2 group now instead of 1, so we could work more efficiently. the group were going to use the original name Detention Deficit because we all thought the other team would go back the the old name of The Regulars, but they didn't so my gorup didn't want to have the same name for our series as them, so Kirk and i started to look for a new name ASAP, so Tara and Mike could print off audition sheets to post around college.
I came up with the idea of "lines" because we thought just 1 word name would have more of an effect then trying to make is sound good, for example the series Scrubs, which is just 1 name, but is based around the clothes they wear is a hospital which are called Scrubs, therefore it has some connection to the fact it's based in a hospital. This is why we decided on lines, because this series is going to be set in detention, therefore we needed something that vaguely resembled a detention scene. I thought of lines, as old detections you used to have to write alot of lines to try to get the discipline into your head. I thought this was a very good idea and this is what we are now going to use.
After the group did this Mike and Tara went out to put up 30 posters around the college to advertise our auditions for the web series which is going to be held on Wednesday.

First meeting
I was happy to vote Tim and Alex as chairs of meetings, as they both have serious sides and i knew they would get the job done, i didn't think the time we spent deciding on this was very productive, and we easily wasted about an hour on one very simple decision, which, due to the short amount of time we have on this project is not very effective. I personally thought this was due to people trying to automatically take control, which for a group project was very selfish of them.
We slowly got on to creating initial ideas. which again i felt that even though there was now a chair, there where a few people still trying to make all the decisions, but were soon vented out and people finally started to listen to others ideas, we went with a "Detention" idea, even though i didn't really like the idea, most people seemed to agree with it, i didn't vote but there must of been more then 12 who agreed because that's the idea we are now flowing with.
I admit i didn't really talk alot during the ideas phase one because i didn't really have a solid idea to put forward, and another was Tara and I were totally ignored and the only reason they came to us was because we kicked up a fuss that we were being ignored. this was when we didn't have a chair and certain people "took command"
I thought the giving of jobs was a total nightmare, at the start of giving out the director jobs was fine, people were voting and we decided on them as a team, but once that was out of the way it all fell apart, we didn't vote to agree on any other jobs, and when it came to the job i really wanted to do which was editing i put my hand up for it and i got totally ignored and they carried on and didn't even acknowledge the fact that Loz wasn't the only one who wanted to take that role.
The whole day was a nightmare, and considering we had about 3 hours today we decided on very little, i can see this project going very badly if this is the way it goes everyday.

Show
Our new project we've started is called 'Show'. As a group we need to make a 1 minute (minimum) webisode, with each of us having different roles. Then we need to market it and try and get as many views as possible.
First session of show (04/01/10)
Today we started our Show project,
I first started with watching a few micro series from such things as Living with the infidels, Chad Vader or The Guild.
First one we looked at was Chad Vader, which is meant to be Darth Vader's younger brother, its basically a spoof on star wars. it takes the piss out of different parts of star wars, they first were kind of funny, but the dragged out storyline was a bit dull. It would attract star wars fans as they will get the references very well.
Living with the infidels at first i thought was a bit odd as it was really sterotypical, but the funny side of the events that are going on, i thought it played on the humor very well, and kept you watching the episodes, after the lesson i went home and watched the rest.
This is the first episode of Living with the infidels, it has a short title sequence at the start, but pretty much jumps straight into the plot, not really getting much time to get used to the characters, they are expecting you to watch more to get to know them better.
It's trying to take serious issues and make them funny, like taking the serious threat of terroists and get you to see the funny sides of them.

How to put on shows
There are many of different ways creative and media practitioners might use show in their work, this can be from doing performances on stage such as stand up and in theaters from on the screen like television and films.
.

Television is quite an obvious and easy type of show, as you can watch the show i

The idea of a Web - series is basically a short episode, like 3-5 minutes of material only shown on the web, they are different to TV series because they are very short, and if they were to be played on TV would be way to short then the usual 30 minute program, it also opens up the market to everyone as uploading to youtube is free so pretty much anyone can make a web - series.
For this show project i have been looking at a various amount of different

Stand up comedians is a good example of using show to promote their work, as most of there performances are a show, playing to a crow to help promote themselves as a comic
They start their career performing to smaller venues, reacting with the crowd and basically trying to gain their trust. While I was in New york, i went to see a comedy performance and the Comedy Store there, and this was a lot more of a personal experience then going to massive venues to watch famous comedians like Jimmy Carr, its the start of their careers so they wil
l want gain audiences trust to become popular and famous, this is how comedians u
se show to help promote themselves.
Street performers idea of show is basically there whole act, they use show
to performance on the streets to help gain money, they perform on the streets to entertain people and gain a sort of fame on the streets, there is a street performer in Cambridge who dresses up like statues, and every time i go past he is there pretty much every day just stand
ing still, at first i thought this was quite interesting, but i think audiences will get quite bored, in Cambridge there are only a few but in places like Spain, there are many performances just on one street which gets repetitive.
Using cinemas to display films is a great example of show, using audiences reactions to gauge what people think about the films, a good example of new and recently types of cinema is the use of 3D in some recent films, for example in the hit film Avatar, some experie
nces are better in the cinema then on your DvD player at home and this film is a good example of this, i personally thought that Avatar was alot better when i went to see this film at the cinema in full 3D, it gave the maximum experience and made you feel like part of the film, unlike once i got it on DVD when they don't do 3D dvds for new films like this, it felt alot more like a film and the cinema experience was gone.
Television is quite an obvious and easy type of show, as you can watch the show i
n the comfort of your own house, this gives a big audience if your television program is on a major channel like BBC or ITV, there are a various of different shows displayed on TV, from Dramas, to documentaries, this opens up TV to a varied audience, which regular shows would onl
y focus on people for the specific roles, for example, comedians only appeal to a specific number of people, people who like a good laugh, which covers a wide audience, but Television can ap
peal to everyone, depending on the channel.
Programs such as Ashes to Ashes do appeal to a specific audience, but because it is more regally available then going to a show to see a comedian, this gives a big gain for the television market, as it leaves the TV more popular, as most people have a TV in their house, but not everyone has been to see like a show or something like that, gives TV a wider audience to display their work.
For this show project i have been looking at a various amount of different
web series, some which try to have a serious side (not many) and some with a comedy series, and some which are just a bunch of short videos. one which follows a series is The Guild, which is about some game called World of Warcraft, this follows a woman who is the leader of this "Guild" trying to sort out situations in the real world, but mostly with her online friends, this web-series is appealing again to a specific audience like most shows, this one is appealing to the gamer type, especially ones who play World of Warcraft which i am not so i didn't really understand what they were talking about.
One web-series i did understand was Chad-Vader, who is Darth Vaders "cousin", and it follows the every day life of this person, trying to live a normal life but in a robot suit, it appeals to me more because i have watched every Star Wars film so i understand most of the references involved but again this show appeals to the star wars fan.
Some web series are made up of just random short films, for example i stumbled across the channel called 'Smosh', they are two guys just making videos, they started with just messing around in front of the webcam, but the grew more popular until they
had a massive following, now they use expensive equipment to create and edit their videos to advance and try to keep their following and help them grow, they have been going for a few
years now and have
over 50 million channel views. they just mess around in front of the camera which basically makes the audience laugh, there skill to think up new material will keep them
going for a long time.
